CHICAGO (IslamOnline) - British Muslims condemned the high handedness of London police during peaceful demonstrations against Israeli atrocities near the office of the British Prime Minister on Wednesday, reported The Muslim News. During the duration of the demonstration, a police helicopter hovered overhead and uniformed policemen took close-up pictures of the over 2000 demonstrators. Yousuf Bhailock, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, told the Muslim News, "We were assured by the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police on Tuesday, that they would have a low profile policing and would be sensitive to the demonstrators," he said, "We will ask for assurance from the police that the photographs will not be used in a detrimental way," The demonstrators condemned the decision taken by the British Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister not to rebuke the Israelis for the massacre of Palestinians. Some of the placards that the protestors were holding read: "Mr. Blair, why don't you condemn the massacre," "Mr. Blair, why are you silent", "Stop killing children in Palestine", "Bring Sharon to justice", and the standard, "Death to Israel". Tanzim Wasti, Foreign Affairs spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain said, "Some police were high handed. They did not allow Muslims to move to a new barricaded area even though they were being squashed in the small area provided." "The police had no right to fly the police helicopter above the picket, it was seen like an Israeli helicopter intimidating us. Why the helicopter, when the demonstration was peaceful?" he asked. The demonstrators dispersed peacefully after the three hours and even cleaned up the area before leaving. |
