SRINAGAR (AFP) - Six Kashmiri fighters were among 12 people killed in the restive Indian state of Kashmir in independence-linked violence. The killings occurred in separate gun battles with Indian soldiers in Kashmir's northern Budgam, Baramulla and Doda districts. Witnesses alleged that Indian soldiers shot dead one of the Kashmiri fighters after taking him captive in Budgam district, sparking citizen protests. More than 50 fighters have been killed in the past week across the Kashmir valley - a figure the police report attributed to an increasing number of fighters moving down from their mountain hideouts before the onset of winter. In a separate incident, unidentified gunmen forced their way into the house of a shopkeeper, Muzaffur Khan, early Thursday at Kangroosa village, in the northern district of Baramulla and shot dead him, his wife and son. Police officials alleged it was a "cold-blooded killing" carried out by suspected opposition members. But no group has taken responsibility for the killing so far. Meanwhile, the bodies of three policemen, allegedly abducted by opposition members in the southern Kashmiri district of Poonch two days ago, were recovered from Poonch's nearby Chamriar forest area. Police said two Indian soldiers were injured when their jeep ran over a landmine triggered by Kashmiri fighters at Zangam, near the northern town of Patan, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar. The vehicle was ripped apart by the force of the blast. Indian troops and groups fighting for independence in the Indian zone of Kashmir have claimed more than 34,000 lives since an uprising against Indian control began in 1989. |
