Egypt Confirms NO Summit With Clinton

By Rabii Shaheen for IslamOnline

CAIRO & DAMASCUS (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amr Moussa, denied the possibility of holding a summit between Clinton, Mubarak, Arafat and Barak in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, per Washington's request.

"There is no summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, the main theme now is the Arab summit," said Mussa in a press conference on Tuesday.

President Clinton had been trying to convince the Egyptian president to host a summit for the four leaders in order to reach a solution to the ongoing Middle East crisis.

American diplomacy had hoped to hold the Arafat-Barak summit before an Arab summit, scheduled to convene in Cairo by October 21st.

Diplomatic sources in Cairo have confirmed to IslamOnline that no final agreement to a possible quadruple summit has been reached.

The sources also said that Palestinians have asked for a complete halt to Israel's use of force against Palestinian civilians before considering such summit, a position backed by the Egyptian side.

Palestinians are also asking Israel to pull back all military forces out of Palestinian cities to their original positions prior to the current uprising.

Egyptian officials were not enthusiastic to hold the summit, which may pressure the Palestinians to end their current uprising without acquiring guarantees from the Israelis to end the aggression.
