First Post-Revolution Parade By Iranian Policewomen

TEHRAN (AFP) - For the first time since the Islamic revolution of 1979, around 100 women police officers went on parade in Tehran Monday, dressed in black chadors and carrying sub-machine guns, in front of Iranian Spiritual Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The women police officers were the first to have been trained at the police college where the parade took place.

They have been trained mainly in crime prevention, protection and social surveillance.

Most professions in Iran are open to women, who also outnumber men at universities.

The chador, a black outfit covering the whole body, is obligatory in a number of government offices.

Several thousand men also paraded in front of Khamenei, who presented gifts to a number of them, in particular to the wrestler Ali Reza Dabir, who has just won a gold medal at the Olympic games in Sydney.
