U.S. Sues Company For Alleged Religious Discrimination Against Muslim

By Ayub Khan

CHICAGO (IslamOnline) - The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has sued Pittsburgh-based ABB Alstom Power/Integrated C-E Services for firing a Muslim employee who refused to shave his beard citing religious injunctions.

According to the lawsuit, Faieclice Bey was fired on March 5th for not adhering to the company rule that states all workers must be clean-shaven in order for half-face respirator masks to remain sealed to their skin.

The EEOC said that the company discriminated against Bey by firing him instead of letting him use an alternative respirator mask that could easily accommodate his beard.

Under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, employers are obliged to accommodate the religious beliefs of all job applicants and employees.

ABB Alstom Power/Integrated C-E Services declined to comment on the lawsuit saying that they have not seen it yet, even though the government filed the lawsuit last week
