Somali President Names New Prime Minister To Form Government

DJIBOUTI (AFP) - Somali President Abdulkassim Salat Hassan on Sunday named a former minister and businessman, Ali Khalif Galaydh, as his prime minister and gave him the tasks of setting up Somalia's first government after nearly 10 years of chaos caused by clan warfare.

Hassan, who was elected head of state by the parliament in Djibouti in August after a reconciliation process, has the extraordinary job of restoring order to the east African Somali nation, with almost all of the country's opposing warlords refusing to recognize his presidency.

Somalia has lacked a central government and been ruled by clan-based factions since the 1991 overthrow of Mohamed Siad Barre. The U.N. is supporting Somalia in its transition to a peaceful democracy.

Galaydh, a former minister under Barre, is a member of one of the groups making up the Darod clan, which dominates the north and some of the central regions of Somalia.

Galaydh, also the head of a Dubai-based telecommunications firm, is said by a Hassan aid to have the backing of influential Somali businessmen in the capital of Mogadishu and elsewhere.
