by Dina Rashed CHICAGO (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Reports from the Occupied Territories cite that Israeli settlers in Gaza and the West Bank are taking to the streets and attacking Palestinian civilians and property.
Settlers have burned shops and trees, beat Palestinians, and shot at Palestinian homes in and around the village of Bidya, according to the latest reports provided by the Addameer Organization, a Palestinian human rights organization based in Ramallah. In the Al Zahra neighborhood of Gaza under Palestinian Authority control, built primarily to house Palestinian refugee returnees, Israeli troops have assumed authority. In Sourif village, near Nablus, Israeli settlers entered and shot live ammunition at civilians. At least 3 Palestinians are in critical condition as a result. Thousands of Jewish settlers have taken to the streets in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Shufat, Al Azeriyeh, Anata, and Sheik Jarrah, smashing cars and shooting at civilians. Recent reports also state that Israeli settlers are attempting to break into the Orient House in East Jerusalem. In Tiberias, Israelis burned down a mosque dating back several hundred years. Israeli authorities announced they have closed Gaza International Airport. No flights will be allowed to land or take off from the airport. Israeli tanks, heavy artillery and thousands of soldiers have also been deployed along the Lebanese-Israeli border, Addameer reported. In another development, Jewish settlers targeted Islamic holy sites in Jaffa, attacking two mosques: the Great Mosque and Hassan Baik mosque. According to reports by the Palestinian Authority's data bank, Jewish settlers threw Molotov cocktails on the Great Mosque at 1:00AM on Sunday morning, damaging the area close to the southern gate. Immediately after the incident, settlers attacked Hassan Baik Mosque, setting its store on fire. On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak issued an ultimatum to Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, to end the violence in two days or Israel would consider the peace process dead and would act accordingly. In a press conference held in Gaza later the same day, the Palestinian Authority's Minister of Information, Yasser Abd Rabuh, responded by saying that Israel is responsible for the worst bloodshed in decades in the West Bank and Gaza The escalation of violence, with its repercussions and setbacks for the peace process, is the fault of Barak and his cabinet, he added. |
