15 Killed In Ethnic Clashes In Far Eastern Indian State

NEW DELHI (AFP) - At least 15 people were killed in bloody clashes between Muslim settlers and tribes in the far eastern Indian state of Tripura, the Press Trust of India reported yesterday.

It said two women and a child were among those killed in separate clashes that erupted late Friday night between the settlers from Bangladesh and Tripura's original inhabitants.

Three of the victims were hacked to death yesterday by tribes in Tripura's Teliamura district, the police said in the state capital of Agartala.

The police imposed a curfew and ordered security personnel to shoot rioters on sight in areas where the clashes were followed by arson and bomb attacks, they said, adding that 13 others were injured in the fighting since Friday.

Ethnic fighting between the Bengali-speaking settlers and the various tribal organizations is common in Tripura, a tiny Indian state that has attracted many refugees from adjoining Bangladesh over the decades.
