LAGOS, May 14 (AFP)-Convicted robbers are to be punished with death, and adulterers stoned to death, if found guilty in a northern Nigerian state where the Islamic Sharia law, is in operation, the Nigerian daily newspaper, the Sunday Punch, reported, citing copies of the Sharia law already in circulation in the state. Zamfara began operating Sharia law on January 27, despite opposition by a handful of Nigeria's Christian minority. Bahiru Sule, a Muslim found guilty of drinking, was given 80 lashes in public in the first such case brought under Sharia law early February, while a cow thief had his limbs amputated in March. It said copies of the Sharia law, signed by state governor Ahmed Sani, have been distributed to legislators and other government officials. Christians in Nigeria claim the extension of Sharia law from family to criminal law in the state, violates the 1999 Nigerian constitution. Zamfara is one of Nigeria's 36 states, which gained renown last year when Sani announced plans to extend Sharia law. Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo has been cautious in his opposition to Sharia, saying those aggrieved should go to court. |
