Holbrooke Mission Arrives in Rwanda

KIGALI, May 7 (AFP)-A U.N. Security Council delegation touring the Great Lakes region of central Africa in an effort to secure a lasting ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), arrived in Rwanda Sunday.

The delegation, led by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke touched down Sunday morning at Kigali's International Gregoire Kayibanda airport. They are to meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and representatives of the main opposition movement in the DRC; the Congolese Rally for Democracy (CRD).

The visit comes just two days after an outbreak of fighting between Rwandan and Ugandan troops in opposition-controlled Kisangani in northeastern DRC, which Holbrooke described Saturday as an "aberration."

The troops, ostensibly allied in the war against DRC President Laurent Kabila, clashed in the city Friday, leaving at least 15 civilians dead. The Security Council delegation is touring the region to make sure conditions are in place for the deployment of 5,000 U.N. peacekeepers and 500 military observers, charged with monitoring the ceasefire.
