SRINAGAR (AFP) - An official report from India's Border Security Force (BSF) said two Kashmiri fighters were killed in a gunbattle in the restive Indian state of Kashmir. An assistant commandant and two BSF troops were injured in the attack overnight at Sumbal village in Baramulla district, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of the Kashmir summer capital Srinagar. Police said BSF troops cordoned off the village and launched search operations after a tip-off that some Kashmiri fighters were hiding in the area. The holed-up fighters opened fire, killing deputy commandant R.S. Rathore and injuring three others. But two Kashmiri fighters died in the ensuing gunbattle. Troop reinforcements were rushed to the spot. Several homes were damaged and residents fled the area, reports said. Police said a ribbon of smoke curled over the village, reporting about six of the Islamists thought to be hiding in the village seemed to have escaped under cover of darkness. |
