James Zogby Joins Gore Campaign Team

CHICAGO (IslamOnline) - James Zogby, a Christian Arab-American and head of the Arab-American Institute, has been appointed as a senior advisor to the Gore-Lieberman presidential campaign, UPI news agency reported today.

Dagoberta Vega of the Gore campaign told UPI International, "He is serving as a senior advisor on ethnic-American affairs, working with our outreach department in a formal capacity... He has been brought on to strengthen links between the campaign and almost 20 other ethnic groups like Italians, the Irish, Hungarians, Greek-Americans, etc."

However, according to Vega, Zogby will not be advising on the Middle East issues. "From the information I have, he has no foreign policy advisory role," Vega said.

Zogby, the founder and president of the Arab-American Institute, has been an outspoken leader within the Arab-American community. He hosts a TV program called "A Capital View", has a weekly "Washington Column" on U.S. politics, is published in major newspapers of the Arab world, and has debated the controversial Steve Emerson on national TV.

As a member of the Democratic National Committee, Zogby placed the name of Reverand Jesse Jackson before the 1984 Democratic Convention to be nominated as the President of the United States.

He has co-authored, "The Politics of Exclusion (1986)," "Arab American Merchants and the Crisis of the Inner City; Cleveland: A Case Study" (1995) and "The Department of Justice and the Civil Rights of Arab Americans (1998)."

In 1998, Zogby participated in the White House Conference on Hate Crimes. He currently is a member of the advisory council of the National Center for Hate Crime Prevention.

He received a doctorate in religion Temple University in 1975 and a bachelors degree from Le Moyne College. Le Moyne named him outstanding alumnus in 1997 and awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1997.

Zogby is married to Eileen Patricia McMahon and has five children.

Zogby is received with mixed views among American Muslims.
