Mahathir Disappointed With Muslims

CHICAGO (IslamOnline) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad said on Saturday that he is disappointed with fellow Muslims who do not live up to the spirit of Islam and the Hajj, IRNA reported on Saturday.

Mahathir was speaking at the First International Conference On Hajj Guidance in Kuala Lumpur, which is being attended by more than 150 delegates from more than 52 countries.

The conference is sponsored by the Saudi Arabian government and organized by Malayasi's Pilgrim's Fund Board.

Speaking at the conference, Mahathir said that the avoidance of conflict and fighting is part of the Hajj, as it is forbidden not only during the holy months but throughout the year.

"But, quite clearly, Muslims are ignoring the injunction blatantly. Muslims are fighting and killing Muslims everywhere," he said.

"They fight for their political parties and groups and against those which are doing no wrong, even though they know they are ignoring the injunction of Islam.

"And despite the Hajj and the injunction against fighting and killing other Muslims, Muslims unfortunately are bitterly divided among themselves. They fight each other without compunction.

"They even side with non-Muslims in order to ensure their Muslim enemies are defeated, subjugated and oppressed.

"They care not for Muslim brotherhood. Indeed, when they invoke the brotherhood of Islam, it is only to justify their assault against other Muslims.

"If fellow Muslims are oppressed and massacred they will not help each other because they are too busy with their own quarrels."

Mahathir expressed similar sentiments at the International Islamic University where he was the keynote speaker at the National Muslims' Youth Intellectual Discourse. He said that while the objective of the Ummah is the same, there are many different interpretations of the teachings and so many different routes to reach the destination.

He said that he was disappointed that Muslims were prepared to fight each other over the differing routes.

"Even if we do not become one, at least let us be friends and not quarrel,'' he said.

He further added that on the national level it would be good for Muslims to sit down and talk to each other to resolve and reduce the differences.
