Egypt: The Friday Sermon In Sign Language

by Salah Al Arabi

CAIRO (Islam Online) - Dr. Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq, the Egyptian minister of Religious Endowments, for the first time decided to hold Friday Muslim sermons in three Cairo mosques in sign language. The implementation of sign language at these three mosques is just the first step in an effort to eventually generalize the initiative throughout mosques in Egypt. Two million deaf and mute people in Egypt will eventually benefit from this project.

The Chairman of the Egyptian Organization for the Rights of the Handicapped proposed the project.

The Egyptian deaf and mute community celebrated the decision with overwhelming joy. Tens of thousands of them celebrated in coffee shops and social clubs. Many of them raised their hands in victory signs and placards of the Egyptian Organization for the Rights of the Handicapped.
