Lakers And Pacers And Fires, Oh My

WASHINGTON (Islam Online & AFP)-The Los Angeles Lakers basketball team was triumphant Monday night with a 116-111 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the NBA Finals at Staples Center.

This victory gave the Lakers their first NBA championship since 1988, and their 12th overall, including their pre-1960 years in Minneapolis. The 12 titles are second to Boston's 16.

However, moments after the Los Angeles Lakers became champions, they became hostages.

The victory touched off a violent, destructive celebration by thousands of people who gathered outside the Staples Center. Fires were set in the streets, one in a vandalized police car, and chaos ruled as the arena cleared.

So much mayhem was caused that police forbade the teams from leaving the arena until order was restored, which took the arrival of hundreds of police officers, many on horseback and motorcycles and others in riot control gear.
