JAMMU, India, June 8 (AFP)-Three Islamists were killed Thursday in gun battles with the police in separate incidents in Jammu, the winter capital of the northern Indian state of Kashmir. Five men from the Indian Reserve Police were wounded in the encounters, which occurred in three separate places in Jammu. Police said a large number of arms and ammunition were recovered from the Muslims. Search operations were also being carried out in adjoining forests with the help of additional security men, to track down Muslims who had escaped, they added. More than 25,000 people have died since 1989 in Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state, in violence linked to a Islamic Movement drive in the disputed Himalayan region bordering Pakistan. |
