ISLAMABAD, July 10 (AFP) - Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned a bomb blast at the Pakistani embassy in Kabul and called for the immediate arrest of those responsible. The bomb caused "extensive damage" to the consular section of the embassy but no one was injured, a foreign office spokesman said in a statement. "The chancery building has also suffered damage and windows of most of the offices have also been smashed," he said. He expressed the hope that "the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be swiftly apprehended and punished." Witnesses in Kabul said the blast occurred on the roof of the visa section at about 5:30 a.m. (0100 GMT), destroying the roof and shattering the windows of surrounding buildings in the embassy complex. A foreign ministry official earlier said, "the blast appears to be terrorist activity which is a condemnable act." The official, who preferred not be identified, said, "Unless we know the details we cannot fix responsibility." The foreign office spokesman said the Taliban authorities also condemned this "dastardly act" and were carrying out investigations into the incident. "They have promised to increase the security of the embassy," he added. |
