Imbalance On The Technological Front In The Middle East

CAIRO, July 10 (Islam Online)-A most recent study, by the Center for Developing Countries' Studies, which is affiliated with Cairo University, showed that Arabs are increasingly lagging behind on the technological front, compare to their Israeli counterparts.

The study titled "The Future Relations Between The Economic Powers In The Middle East" pointed out Israel has surpassed the Arab world, as well as Turkey and Iran, in human resources and qualifications. The study included some indicative statistics clearly pointing out the gap the Arab world has to bridge to compete technologically and scientifically with Israel.

For example, the study indicated that between 1990-1998 the number of Israelis working in Research and Development rose to 2.6 out of every 1000. Within the same period the ratio of Arab research and development workers dropped to 1.2 per 1000 persons.

Also during the same period the expenditure on education in Israel reached 7.2% of the Gross National Product. In the Arab world the expenditure was not more than 5.2%.

The expenditure allocated to Research and Development in Israel amounted to 1.8% of the Gross Domestic product, while it is not more than 0.2% of the Gross Domestic Product in the Arab World.

The study revealed Israel had registered 139 new technological inventions in 1999 outside and inside Israel, while the Arab world did not registered any new inventions, concluding Israelis, in light of these indications, will get the lion's share in all the prospective regional, and economic projects, if the Arabs do not make a real effort to catch up.
