BERLIN, July 2 (AFP) - Police in Frankfurt in western Germany have arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly tried to blackmail Coca-Cola by putting poisoned bottles in stores, the Bild newspaper's Sunday edition reported. The man, a student who reportedly tried to extort 1.5 million marks (770,000 euros, 730,000 dollars) from the company, was arrested last week, the paper said. Judicial officials in Frankfurt were not immediately available for comment. The Bild said that the man had called the German headquarters of the US firm in Essen, claiming he had put poisoned bottles of Coke in several stores. In a second call, the suspect named stores in the western state of Hesse and then began writing letters demanding the 1.5-million-mark pay-off. Frankfurt investigators told Bild that some bottles of Coca-Cola were found tampered with, without providing further details. Company officials also refused to comment, saying the judicial investigation was ongoing. |
