Turk Beats Off Georgians And Russians To Win Longest Nose Award

ISTANBUL, July 1 (AFP) - When it comes to big noses, Turkey's Mehmet Ozyurek's 8.8 centimeter (3.5 inch) hooter proved to be a world beater in an international contest on Turkey's Black Sea coast.

Ozyurek's extraordinary nose saw off 22 other challengers from Turkey, Georgia and Russia to win the dubious accolade of longest nasal appendage for the second time running, the Anatoly news agency reported.

But whether his victory will be internationally recognized is another matter, as measuring techniques were hardly conventional.

In keeping with a tradition started in 1997 with the first longest nose contest; the competing organs were measured in anchovy bones, anchovies being the main source of income along the Black Sea coast.

The competition took place at a girls' college in the town of Rize, before a panel of judges composed of a plastic surgeon, an ear-nose-and-throat specialist and a dermatologist.

Ozyurek's nose won him three Turkish gold pieces as he beat fellow Turk Ahmet Ari, 65, and Georgian Maniuka Lomici.
