DAMASCUS (Islam Online) July 1 - The concluding statement of the 9th Regional Conference of the Baa'th ruling party in Syria stated that Damascus was ready to resume the peace process in a way that fulfills Syrian legitimate demands as well as the aims of a just peace. The two conditions set by the statement to resume the peace process are that Israel commit to fully withdraw from the post-June 1967 occupied territories and guarantee the national rights of the Palestinian people. The statement, published by the official Syrian news agency Sanna on June 30th, also recommended the activation of the Damascus Declaration, stressing the essentiality of its development in order to become the nucleus for a larger Arab unity project. Addressing the situation in neighboring Iraq, the statement re-emphasized the absolute necessity of ending the suffering of the Iraqi people. The statement also emphasized the importance of maintaining a Turkish-Arab dialogue. Domestically, the statement declared that the democratic and political status should be promoted in a way that bolsters the internal front. It also stressed the need to purge all pockets of political and economic corruption. The statement, addressing both foreign policy and domestic political issues, also called for promoting the nature of the relations between the Baa'th party and the state. It suggested that the party overlook the general policies of the state without involving itself within everyday specific administrative details. The conference concludes its session on July 2nd. The meetings lasted four days, attended by 1021 working members of the party in addition to 138 observers. The meetings resulted in electing 90 members for the Baa'th's central committee, 65 of which are new members. |
