Muslims Protest Prostitution, Drinking In Northern Nigerian State

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) - More than 1,200 Muslims this week staged a rally to protest the continued presence of brothels and bars in the northern Nigerian state of Jigawa despite the declaration of Islamic law, witnesses said Wednesday.

The Muslims marched on Monday from the center of the state capital, Dutse, to the emir's palace, chanting anti-prostitution slogans and demanding the closure of all bars in the state, the witnesses told AFP by telephone.

The state government earlier this month declared plans to introduce the strict Islamic Sharia code banning prostitution and the sale and consumption of alcohol and introducing strict punishments for a series of crimes.

"This rally is staged to register the displeasure of the people of this state at the continued presence of brothels and beer parlors in almost all the major towns of this state," a spokesman for the protesters, Bashir Kazaure, said.
