DUSHANBE (AFP) - Seven members of a banned Islamist group were sent to jail Wednesday for terms ranging between five and 12 years after being caught in possession of tracts attacking the secularity of the Tajik state, a court spokesman said. The seven members of the Khizbi Takhrir (Freedom Party) were jailed for attacking the foundations of the state, organizing a criminal association and incitement to religious and racial hatred, a spokesman for the northern court of Leninabad said. He said the Islamists wanted to build an Islamic state in Central Asia and had infiltrated from neighboring Uzbekistan. More than 100 Islamists and members of banned parties, both Uzbeks and Tajiks, have been arrested in Tajikistan and are being prosecuted. Islamist groups have launched several offensives against Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan since the beginning of the month. |
