Iran Appeals Court To Issue Verdict Early September

TEHRAN, Aug 14 (AFP)-An Iranian appeals court will deliver a ruling early next month in the case of 10 Iranian Jews sentenced to prison on charges of spying for Israel, a judicial official said on Monday.

Hussein Ali Amiri, spokesperson for the court in the southern city of Shiraz, which first handed down the sentences, said the appeals tribunal was still looking into the "very thick" files of the case. He said a decision should be released by around September 5.

The 10 men were given prison terms between two and 13 years in a case that attracted international attention - and condemnation. The Jews were accused of passing to the Israelis military information about an air base in Shiraz, among other charges. Israel has rejected any spy link to the men.

Three other Jews were acquitted in the case while two Iranian Muslims were given two-year sentences for their auxiliary role in the affair.

Iran's judiciary has issued an international arrest warrant for a man named by the state news agency IRNA as Isaac Belanth, who allegedly founded the spy ring. He is said to be a former teacher who fled Iran for the U.S. in 1991.
