SRINAGAR, India, April 28 (AFP) - A top Muslim commander was among seven people killed in independence-linked violence in Kashmir, a police spokesman said Friday. Abdul Majid Rather, a divisional commander with the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen, was one of two mujahideen killed overnight Thursday in a clash with security forces in the northern Kashmiri district of Kupwara. Four more Muslim fighters were killed in separate incidents in the troubled Himalayan region, while mujahideen shot dead one member of a pro-Indian Muslim militia. Meanwhile, a state government spokesman said Defense Minister George Fernandes made a one-day visit to the Kashmiri summer capital Srinagar on Friday to take stock of the current situation. During his visit, which took place amid heavy security, Fernandes met with Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah and senior army officials, the spokesman said. More than 25,000 people have been killed in violence linked to the Muslim drive for independence launched in Kashmir in 1989.
