Malaysian Filmmaker Dreams Of Islamic Film Industry

KUALA LUMPUR (IslamOnline) – Muslims should set up a film industry to rival the influence of Hollywood, said Malaysian filmmaker Mansur bin Puteh.

The Muslim world annually imports countless Western films, but these films contain elements and ideas that are contrary to Islamic teachings, and therefore have an adverse effect on society, bin Puteh said in an interview with the International Islamic News Agency (IINA).

Currently the most reputable film industry in the Middle East, qualitywise, is that of Iran, although Egypt’s is the most prolific. Turkey also has a worthy film industry. But besides Iran’s movies, most produced in the Muslim world do not portray Islamic behavior and lifestyle, although examples can be found in the Bengali, Pakistani, Algerian, Malaysian and Egyptian studios.

Bin Puteh dreams of a centralized Islamic institute that would take Muslim filmmaking under its wings and develop an efficient and profitable distribution system for films that depict Islamic values and morals.

Bin Puteh pointed out that the Third World would welcome such Islamic films as an entertainment alternative to Hollywood, besides being an important means of instructing Muslims in how to observe Islamic values and morals.
