One Dead In Confrontations Between Separatists, Indonesian Forces

BANDA ACEH, April 20 (AFP)- Aceh, on the northernmost tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, has been mired in violence between Islamists and their supporters and Indonesian security forces.

More than 300 people have been killed in the violence there this year. The Aceh Merdeka movement has been fighting for an independent Muslim state in Aceh since 1976.

Meanwhile, a teenager was killed and two others were injured in the latest eruption of violence in the restive province of Aceh, police and residents said Thursday.

The teenager was killed and the two others injured when a member of the Brimob police force fired into a house in Air Berudang village in South Aceh after failing to find a man they were searching for late on Wednesday, a local journalist said.

Yaserli, 16, died of a bullet wound to the head while his 19-year old sister and a teenaged cousin were injured in the legs.

The Brimob member and a colleague were looking for Yaserli's father, who was not in the house. Witnesses said the policemen left the house hurriedly after the shooting.

South Aceh deputy police chief, Major Supriadi Jalal, confirmed that the shooting had taken place, but declined further comment saying: "We are still gathering data on the incident."

On Wednesday, unidentified men set fire to the house of the Peusangan sub-district chief in North Aceh, but the house was empty at the time, North Aceh Police Chief Lieutenant Colonel Syafei Aksal said.
