Land For Black Farmers Says Mugabe

Addressing an election rally, President Robert Mugabe, said he would fight any opposition to his plan to seize white farmers' land and give it away to poor black people. He was quoted as saying that his government no longer intended to ask for the land; it would take it without negotiation. Any whites who objected should leave the country.


The main challenger to Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze's re-election bid conceded defeat on Sunday shortly after polling stations closed. "Judging from the exit polls, I've lost," said former Communist leader Dzhumber Patiashvili.

The Africa-Europe Summit a week ago brought together head of states and high-ranking officials in a first attempt at group discussion of issues, ranging from debt relief, development, democracy and human rights.
