Kuwaiti Police Bust 25 Factories For Homebrewed Liquor

KUWAIT CITY (AFP)-Kuwaiti police have busted 25 homebrewed liquor factories run by Asian laborers. Alcohol is illegal and banned in oil-rich Kuwait in accordance with Islamic Shari’a law, but smuggled alcohol and homebrewed liquor can be bought on the black market at vastly inflated prices.

Al-Watan, quoting security sources, said police raids were mounted last week in residential areas with high concentrations of laborers from China, India and Bangladesh. An unspecified number of arrests were made.

Kuwaiti clerics last year ruled that Muslims could drink non-alcoholic beer, which was briefly allowed after the 1991 Gulf War. The beer is now back on sale in the emirate's stores and supermarkets.
