China Executes 11 Islamists In Northwest Xinjiang

BEIJING (AFP)- China has executed 11 "terrorists" linked to Muslim resistance in the extreme northwestern region of Xinjiang. The Xinjiang Daily said 29 "criminals and separatists" were convicted of a range of crimes including murder at Asku and Baicheng on March 10 and 11, and 11 were sentenced to death.

Tensions between the majority Muslim population, and the ruling Han Chinese government have long plagued Xinjiang and took on new impetus with the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, and the emergence of independent central Asian republics across the border.

The executions were carried out immediately after the verdict was read out in front of a big crowd in the open air, said the report. The first trial convicted a group led by an Uighur named, Maimaititu'erxun Sidike found guilty of killing 6 workers in a mine in August 1997.

They were also convicted of "separatism, pillage, causing explosions, theft and making explosives", said the paper.

The second group led by Aihemaiti Amuti was found guilty of killing 2 policemen and a police informer in February 1996, and convicted of "separatism, arms trafficking and possession of explosives," said the paper.
