DOHA, Qatar (IslamOnline) – Lifting sanctions on Iraq
must be the top priority if an Arab summit is held, according to the
respondents in an Islam Online poll held March 2 – 12.
The poll, on the site’s Arabic language pages, found
that 92.8 percent of those surveyed believe that “lifting the sanctions on
the Iraqi people is the top priority of any future Arab summit.”
Almost the same amount, 91.9 percent, said that they want
any future summit of Arab leaders to commit to defending Lebanon in case
Israel attacks it again in the future.
The poll indicated that the Arab masses oppose their
governments’ policies toward Iraq, especially the fact that they are toeing
the western line in imposing sanctions on the country for the past 10 years.
Those sanctions have led to grave medical problems for
the formerly prosperous Iraq, including diabetes, heart disease, and liver and
kidney problems.
The Arab governments have so far refused to hold a summit
for lack of agreement on many issues. The closest thing to a summit was the
meeting of Arab foreign ministers held in Beirut on March 11.
