Serb Soldiers Are Suspects in Massacre of Muslims

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dec. 15 (AFP) - Two of seven Bosnian Serb soldiers questioned by the UN war crimes tribunal investigators here are Srebrenica war crimes suspects, their lawyer Krstan Simic said.

"These people are suspected, but not accused [of war crimes], which gives them the opportunity to explain their role in that event," Simic said, adding that it was the first time that suspects for crimes committed during the Bosnia's 1992-95 war voluntarily gave testimony to International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) investigators.

He said that one of the two was still an active member of the Republika Srpska's (Bosnian Serb entity) army, without revealing their identity. The other five persons were being questioned as witnesses also about Srebrenica case, Simic said.

Bosnian Serb forces occupied the Northeastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995 although being known as a UN-protected enclave. According to International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) figures more than 7,000 Muslims have been missing since, presume to have be massacred.

Republika Srpska's (RS) Defense Minister Manojlo Milovanovic said Tuesday that seven members of the RS army were being questioned in Banja Luka since Monday by the Hague-based investigators. He added that the questioning would last until Friday. In concordance with Milanovic's statement, the ICTY confirmed Wednesday that people were being questioned in Banja Luka, stressing that none of them was indicted for war crimes.
