Mujahideen pound Russian
forces, Russians deny all
After Chechen mujahideen downed two Russian jets and five helicopters on Tuesday and killed more than 100 Russian soldiers on Wednesday, all Russian officials could say was that the reports were lies perpetuated by media provocateurs. A Russian armored patrol was ambushed inside Grozny late Wednesday by about 1,000 Chechen mujahideen armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Chechen officials said between 300-350 soldiers had died, while journalists said they had counted around 100 bodies.

Two Israeli shells slammed into a school in the southern village of Arab Salim Thursday, wounding 20 children, four of them seriously. The children, aged between 5 and 13, were attending classes in this village, just north of the central sector of the Israeli-occupied border strip. Police said the full extent of the casualties was not immediately clear because the wounded had been evacuated to hospital in the nearby town of Nabatiyeh under extremely difficult circumstances as the road to the town had also come under Israeli shelling.
