Saudi Arabia Inaugurates World’s Largest Slaughterhouse

MECCA (IslamOnline) – Saudi Arabian authorities inaugurated the world’s largest slaughterhouse on Saturday, March 11, big enough to accommodate the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of animals for the Hajj.

Crown Prince Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz attended the inauguration of Mu’aisem Slaughterhouse on an area covering 500 square meters in Mina Valley, just outside Mecca, which is in the western part of Saudi kingdom.

The slaughterhouse cost $125.3 million to build and will employ about 10,000 people in the slaughter of 200,000 animals per day, according to officials. Saudi Arabia keeps 650 veterinarians on call for the occasion.

The more than 2 million pilgrims attending the Hajj send hundreds of thousands of sheep, calves, bulls and camels for sacrifice every year, according to the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh).

The sacrifice is not obligatory, but the vast majority of pilgrims perform the deed.

In the past, pilgrims used to slaughter the animals themselves or agree with a local butcher to do it for them.
