Bahrain Frees Prisoners Jailed For Protests For Eid

MANAMA, March 15 (AFP) - Bahrain has decided to free a number of prisoners to mark Eid Al-Adha, including inmates held for their role in anti-government protests, the official news agency GNA said Wednesday.

It said the emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa, decided to pardon an undisclosed number of prisoners "involved in crimes against public rights ... to allow them to return to the right path."

Last June, Sheikh Hamad ordered the release of more than 300 people detained since protests broke out in December 1994 at a cost of at least 38 lives. They included Bahrain's top Shiite Muslim opposition figure, Sheikh Abdel Amir al-Jamri.

The troubles have eased since the death of Bahrain's former emir, Sheikh Issa bin Salman al-Khalifa, in March 1999. The opposition's key demand is the restoration of parliament, which Sheikh Issa suspended in 1975.
