Izetbegovic Takes Over As Chairman Of Bosnia's Tripartite Presidency

SARAJEVO, Feb 14 (AFP) - Alija Izetbegovic, the Muslim member of Bosnia-Hercegovina's tripartite presidency, took over as its chairman Monday for the next eight months, Bosnian television said.

In a ceremony held in Sarajevo to mark the handover from Ante Jelavic, a Croat, Izetbegovic said his priorities would be the improvement of relations with neighboring Croatia, Bosnia's admission to the Council of Europe, the country's further approach to Euro-Atlantic structures as well as cooperation within the Stability Pact, the television said.

On the internal level Izetbegovic announced measures regarding the reduction of military personnel by an additional 15 percent this year, economic recovery, and faster return of refugees.

Bosnia's collective presidency consists of three members representing each of the three communities living in the country - Muslims, Croats and Serbs. The members - Izetbegovic, Jelavic and Zivko Radisic, a Serb - rotate every eight months as chairman.
