“The appeal opened today and was adjourned probably until after the Eid holiday,” said an Indonesian diplomat. “Documents were submitted and arguments heard by the judge,” he added.
The embassy was waiting for details from the lawyer, but did not expect a second session before the end of the month.
Jakarta has urged the authorities to show mercy on 36-year-old Kartini bint Karim, who gave birth in custody a month ago, just before she was sentenced on February 27.
The embassy hired a lawyer and translator for the appeal.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab said last Friday he was almost certain that the Muslim maid will escape the death sentence. Shihab said he was “more than optimistic” that the sentence would be mitigated.
“I am more than optimistic that Kartini will not be stoned to death since not only have we a convincing argument but also a good and solid relationship with the UAE government.”
The Foreign Ministry has also cast doubts on the legal process.
The court in Fujairah, on the Indian Ocean coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), acquitted her Muslim Indian lover in absentia after he reportedly fled the country.
