Prostitution Spreads In Kosovo
on NATO Forces' Demand
The international troop presence in the war-torn Albanian Muslim province of Kosovo is fuelling a prostitution boom and brothels and girly bars are proliferating. Traffic in women of eastern European origin has grown since the arrival in July of the 45,000 men of the NATO force KFOR, and personnel of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). No Muslim women are involved. The prostitutes come from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova and Bulgaria. Most are here of their own accord, but some have been kidnapped by or sold to their pimps.


The government in Malaysia has begun to crack down on freedom of expression after Islamists made major inroads to assuming power in the elections of two months ago. Five private newspapers, mostly those close to opposition parties, were threatened by the Home Affairs Ministry with the withdrawal of their publishing permits, which could lead to closure. In Kedah state, the local government banned the chiefs of mosques where the state ruler performs his Friday prayers from leading the congregation and giving the khutba (sermon).



Russian troops backed by helicopter gunships clashed with Chechen fighters in Grozny overnight as Moscow resumed a faltering drive to capture the Chechen capital. Chechen forces suffered heavy losses in the intense fighting, the private NTV television channel claimed, citing military officials in the Russian military headquarters in Mozdok.
