17,000 Converted To Islam In Kuwait Since 1991
KUWAIT CITY, Dec 11 (AFP) - A Kuwaiti charity that aims to increase awareness of Islam in the oil-rich emirate has announced that there have been some 17,000 Muslim converts since 1991, newspapers reported Saturday.
The Islam Presentation Committee (IPC) said the converts came from all social and educational levels and included nationals from Bangladesh, Britain, China, France, Germany, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and the United States.
"IPC will not hesitate to extend its help to those who propagate Islam and the committee has its own people who do that," the charity's head Mohammad Ismail al-Ansari told Al-Qabas newspaper.
Under the constitution, the official religion of Kuwait is Islam, and all but around 200 of the national population of 793,000 are Muslims.
Among the 1.5 million foreign population, whose "freedom of practicing religion in accordance with established customs" is also guaranteed by the constitution, there are at least 100,000 Roman Catholics, mainly Filipinos.
