April 27 - May 7

Philadelphia (AFP) - Recognized as one of the top regional international film festivals in the U.S., the 9th edition presented some 100 films from around the world over 11 days including features, documentaries and shorts. According to Artistic Director Phyllis Kaufman, over 50% of the films in this year's line-up have no U.S. theatrical distributor. Among the noted screenings are Suzhou River, Grand Prize winner at Rotterdam and Paris; The Charcoal People; Journey to the Sun; The Opportunists, recently screened at Cognac Thriller Festival; Crane World, winner at the Toulouse Latin American festival; Juan, I Forgot I Don't Remember; Legacy and George Washington, screened at Berlin. A landmark premier program created in collaboration with The Bit Screen, Streaming Cinema is presenting the Internet festival program featuring 20 interactive creations for the Internet from eight countries. To further garnish the lavish program, the 15th edition of the Festival of Independents with a series of four programs featuring 16 works created by regional film and video makers, two outdoor weekend screenings, panel discussions, and a retrospective of seven films will be held.

Oberhausen International Short Film Festival

May 4-9

Oberhausen (AFP) - For the 46th time, Oberhausen presents hundreds of short films and videos in several competitions and special programs, as well as the world's biggest short film market, screening about 3,000 films and videos in one of the 12 viewing booths. For six days Oberhausen is going to be the center of the international short film scene - filmmakers, guests, journalists and the audience are going to meet, discuss, and gain an overview over current trends and developments.

Drama, experimental film or animation, the U.S.A. or Kazakhstan, Japan or Senegal, 30 seconds or 35 minutes: anything goes, as long as they make it short. Every year the Festival receives about 3,000 entries, out of which about 70 films and videos are selected for the International Competition, the traditional core of the Festival.

The German Competition will present five programs with about 30 films and videos and the 23rd International Children's Cinema is presenting about 40 films, to be judged by children themselves.
