Islam on the Internet: Challenges and Opportunities
Rapid proliferation of the Internet provides tremendous opportunities for presenting and acquiring knowledge about Islam, and sharing information among Muslims around the world. In recognition of such opportunities, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) initiated the MISIC Conference in 1998. Since then, these conferences have been instrumental in bringing together the Internet users from all over the world to share ideas and experiences about the potential use of the Internet as a tool for effective presentation of Islamic knowledge, and to forge personal and inter-organizational relationships. Such users include Muslim scholars, information technology professionals, Internet applications developers, producers of Islamic materials for electronic media, and Internet service providers. These conferences have also attracted high-ranking Muslim technology officers from leading corporations including Microsoft, Netscape, Oracle, AMD, and Intel. This year's conference (MISIC 2000) will serve as a forum for new initiatives on the Web, presenting new Islamic applications, forming key task forces aimed at presenting Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims using the Internet, and developing long-term support for emerging internet-based applications and services. |
