You and Your Parents Hadith
Do you ever wonder who you are? How did you come to look, dress, talk and act the way you do? Were you born that way? Did you always know proper manners? Who taught you how to eat and drink and to give thanks to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala)? Who taught you how to use the bathroom? How about all the duas for traveling, for eating and drinking? Who helped you to learn your Arabic alphabet? Finally, who helped you memorize some suras from the Quran?

As their children, you are special to your parents. Remember that Allah (swt) has chosen your parents and your brothers and sisters for you. According to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), all newborns are created in a state of fitrah. You may have heard that before. It is an Arabic word that means that a person is pure and free of any sins.

As you grow up, your parents will teach you about Allah (swt), the one who created all of us, including the animals, the trees, the skies and all the planets. Your parents will also teach you about the prophets, like Ibrahim, Ismail, Isaac, Nuh, Yaqub, Musa, Isa and Muhammad, may Allah (swt) shed His peace and blessings upon all of them. Each of these prophets was sent by Allah (swt) and they and many more like them are mentioned in the Quran. Your parents will also teach you about the angels, special creations of Allah (swt) who report back to Him about everything that happens on earth.

You may have been fortunate enough to have parents who taught you the Arabic alphabet and maybe even how to read a little bit of the Quran. Until now, you may have been imitating your parents when they performed Salaat. Depending on your health, your parents may have even allowed you to fast a day in Ramadhan. Have you ever fasted?

As you remember, in the beginning we said that Allah (swt) chose your parents for you. You are Allah's (swt) gift to them. In order to help them be good parents for you, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that all parents should teach their children how to pray at the age of seven. But that is just one of the things your parents will teach you. Insha'allah, later, we will look at some of the other things your parents help you with. You and your parents have a special relationship. You are a gift to your parents from Allah (swt). And they are special to you because they are the ones who teach you how to be a better Muslim or a Muslimah!

Narrated Abu Bakra:
"Allah's Apostle said, "Shall I inform you of the biggest of the great sins?" They said, "Yes, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "To join partners in worship with Allah, and to be undutiful to one's parents. "

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle was asked about the offspring of the pagans. He said, "Allah knows what they would have done (were they to live)."

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "No child is born but has the Islamic Faith, but its parents turn it into a Jew or a Christian. It is as you help the animals give birth. Do you find among their offspring a mutilated one before you mutilate them yourself?" The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! What do you think about those (of them) who die young?" The Prophet said, "Allah knows what they would have done (were they to live)."
