Dying a Poor, Lowly Death from Tobacco

World No Tobacco Day 2004

30/05/2004

Almighty Allah says in the Noble Qur'an, “And do not kill yourselves.” (An- Nisaa’: 29). The Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him) is also reported to have said, “Whomsoever drinks poison, thereby killing himself, will sip this poison forever in the Hell-Fire.”

The poisonous effects of cigarette smoking on our health are well-known and well documented.  Smoking, however, has another, less palpable effect on the lives of the families of smokers.  With more than 75% of tobacco users living in developing countries, smoking depletes the already limited financial resources of families that are striving to make ends meet.

This year's World No Tobacco Day focuses on this inseparable relationship between smoking and poverty.

Why do you smoke nevertheless?
