ANKARA,
January 30 (News Agencies) - A Turkish member of parliament on Thursday
sent U.S. President George W. Bush some garlic to calm his nerves as
tension mounts over Iraq and the prospect of a U.S.-led war in the
region, a spokesperson for the U.S. embassy said.
Mehmet
Yildirim from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) visited
U.S. Ambassador Robert Pearson at his residence and gave him a bunch of
garlic for himself and a boxful for Bush, the spokesperson told Agence
France-Presse (AFP).
“Yildirim
said that garlic was good for the heart and had a tranquilizing
effect,” she added.
The
two men expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the standoff over
Iraq’s disarmament as they posed for photographers with the garlic,
the Anatolia news agency said.
