8 Indian Troops Killed, 19 Wounded in Kashmir Landmine Blast

An Indian paramilitary trooper stands guard after a landmine explosion in Srinagar.

SRINAGAR, Kashmir, November 23 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - At least eight Indian troops were killed and 19 others injured Saturday, November 23, when their bus hit a landmine in Indian-administered Kashmir, police sources said.

The army soldiers' convoy hit the landmine placed by suspected Islamic fighters at Lower Munda, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the summer capital Srinagar on the main highway to the winter capital Jammu, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

"Their bus hit a landmine and then tumbled down the mountain into a stream," said a policeman.

The injured soldiers were airlifted to Srinagar's military hospital, where the condition of several was critical.

A private truck carrying soldiers that was following the bus was also damaged.

The attack came a day after fighters stormed a hotel serving as a police camp in central Srinagar, leaving six policemen and two militants dead.

A spokesman for Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamist movement fighting for the independence of Kashmir, claimed responsibility for the attack on the police and said one of the slain fighters was from Lower Munda.

The 300-kilometer (180-mile) highway from Srinagar to Jammu is the only transport link connecting the violence-torn province's two largest cities.

Troops travel on the highway daily, making them attractive targets for attacks.

On November 11, eight federal policemen were killed and several injured in another landmine attack on the road.

The explosion Saturday stranded hundreds of vehicles traveling between Kashmir's capital cities.

"Efforts are on to clear the traffic mess on the highway, and senior police officers have already reached the spot," a police spokesman said.

But police said the area of the attack was cordoned off as security forces hunt for militants.

Meanwhile, in Srinagar, independence fighters fired four rifle grenades at two paramilitary camps without causing any damage.

A little known group called the al-Madina Regiment claimed responsibility for the Srinagar attack.
