Ramadan Starts Thursday in Pakistan

Mosques are crowded with Muslims during the holy month of ramadan

By Asif Farooqi, IOL Correspondent

ISLAMABAD, November 5 (IslamOnline) - The Pakistani Central Committee for sighting Ramadan crescent moon announced Tuesday, November 5, the holy month would start Thursday November 7, as the crescent moon could not be sighted anywhere in the country Tuesday.

A special meeting of the government committee was convened in Peshawar Tuesday to decide whether the Ramadan moon was sighted in the country or not. Announcing the unanimous decision of the committee, which comprises religious scholars from various school of thoughts, chairman of the committee Muneebur Rehaman said the committee or its regional members did not find evidence leading to the sighting of the Ramadan moon till late Tuesday night.

Heavy clouds covered the sky in most part of country on Tuesday. However, as this committee also uses other sources besides the naked eye to find evidence under Shariah for the moon sighting, it concluded that the Ramadan moon would be sighted tomorrow, Wednesday 6 November.
