Whole World Should Not Pay For 9/11: Egyptian Patriarch

The responsibility of Sept. 11 falls on those who committed it, not on the whole world: Pope Shenouda

CAIRO, September 10 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - The patriarch of Egypt’s Coptic Christian population, Pope Shenouda III, has warned that the “whole world” should not be made to pay for the September 11 attacks, in an interview published in Cairo Tuesday, September 10.

“What happened on September 11 is a crime that no-one can forgive, but the responsibility falls on those who committed it, not on the whole world,” he told the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram.

“If innocents die, it also would be a crime, no doubt,” he added in an interview conducted in Canada where he arrived coming from a tour in the United States during which he visited many cities, including New Jersey, New York, Boston and Los Angeles.

He was apparently responding to fears that the United States, which launched its war against terrorism last October in Afghanistan, would now extend it to Iraq, in a bid to topple President Saddam Hussein, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Pope Shenouda recalled that a Coptic Christian was killed in Los Angeles in an act of revenge days after September 11.

“Do you know why he was killed? Because he had good relations with the Muslims, including religious sheikhs who visited his shop,” Pope Shenouda said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was investigating as a hate crime the death of Adel Karas, 48, who was shot during a robbery of his store by three men on September 15.

Numerous incidents of violence toward Muslims and people of Middle Eastern appearance and dress were reported after the strikes on New York and Washington.

Relatives of Karas, who owned a food store in San Gabriel, southwest California, said immediately after the killing they feared it had been religiously motivated.

Shenouda said that many U.S. officials, including the American ambassador in Cairo, apologized for this incident.
