Israeli Raid Prelude to Offensive against Gaza Strip: Palestinians

A Palestinian child, in Gaza, cries, so what?

GAZA CITY, Sept 7 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A top Palestinian official Saturday, September 07, 2002, slammed an overnight raid by some 40 tanks and armored personnel carriers as the "prelude for a large-scale Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip."

"This new Israeli escalation is torpedoing the efforts being made by the international community, which must act with urgency to stop these Israeli crimes and aggressions," a senior aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Nabil Abu Rudeina, told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Palestinian security officials said the Israeli troops demolished an office of Arafat's main stream Fatah movement and an adjacent civil defense post as well as the four metal foundries in Deir el-Balah town and refugee camp, which together have a population of some 45,000 people.

Another Israeli force also staged a brief dawn incursion into the northern Gaza Strip during which they bulldozed the walls of a hotel in the Beit Lahiya district, Palestinian officials said.

Six Palestinians, four of them resistance activists, were abducted during the raid which ended Saturday morning.

For its part, the Israeli army claimed its troops discovered a "powerful bomb" and four underground weapon workshops during the raid into the central Deir el-Balah area of the Gaza Strip, which came amid a security alert in Israel for the start of the Jewish New Year holiday.

The Israeli troops mounted the major incursion into the Gaza Strip overnight amid tight security for the beginning of the Jewish New Year holiday.

The Israeli occupation army hailed the discovery of a large bomb and four rocket-making factories in the raid into Deir el-Balah.

The "powerful bomb" was found in offices of Arafat's mainstream Fatah movement, the Israeli spokesman claimed, adding that groups connected to Fatah were responsible for most anti-Israeli attacks in the Deir el-Balah area.

"Army sappers carried out a controlled explosion of the device after troops had removed documents from the building," the spokesman added.

Israeli tanks spread terror among Palestinians

The raid came as Israeli troops went on maximum alert for the start of the New Year holiday at sundown Friday, following the discovery of a massive car bomb in northern Israel the previous day.

A local leader of Islamic Jihad, Maher Bashir, and three other wanted Palestinians were also arrested, the army spokesman said.

Palestinian security officials said the Palestinians were picked up during house-to-house searches in Deir el Balah town and refugee camp.

The Israeli troops completed their operation and withdrew again Saturday morning, the army spokesman said.

Another Israeli force staged a brief dawn incursion into the northern Gaza Strip during which they bulldozed the walls of a hotel in the Beit Lahiya district, Palestinian security officials said.

The Israeli army sharply stepped up its operations in the Gaza Strip since two soldiers were killed and four wounded in the territory Thursday, September 5.

On Thursday night, three Apache helicopters fired five missiles at a metal foundry in Khan Yunes in the southern Strip, wounding one person and damaging an adjacent police station, in what the army described as a raid against a weapons workshop.

Israeli troops also effectively cut the Gaza Strip in three with the reimposition of roadblocks at two key road junctions.

The army has also been on maximum alert within Israel amid fears that Palestinian activists will seek to mount a spectacular attack during the Jewish New Year, similar to a devastating bombing which marred the Passover holiday in March.

Troop and police reinforcements were deployed in major cities and mobile checkpoints set up. Particular attention was focused on synagogues, holiday resorts and along the boundary with the West Bank.

On Thursday, police intercepted a van laden with 600 kilos (1,300 pounds) of explosives, driven into Israel from the West Bank.

Tel Aviv newspapers said the vigilance of the security forces prevented what could have been the deadliest attack in Israel's history.
