The
U.S. has increasingly come under harsh criticism for its
pro-Israeli biased Mideast policies

DAMASCUS,
July 28 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Foreign Minister Faruq
Al-Shara stepped up Syrian criticism of U.S. Middle East policy in
comments published Sunday, July 28, slamming its “biased and
blind” support of Israel.
“We
are not satisfied with the biased and blind (policies) of the United
States in support of Israel that attacks the Palestinians and
threatens stability in the region,” the foreign minister told the
official Syrian media from Algiers, where he arrived on Saturday, July
27.
On
Wednesday, July 24, Shara blasted Washington for “remaining
silent” over the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
“who, under the pretext of battling terrorism, massacres Palestinian
civilians.”
He
was speaking two days after an Israeli F-16 warplane bombed a crowded
Gaza City neighborhood, killing 16 civilians – 12 of them children -
as well as the military leader of the Islamic resistance movement
Hamas, in an attack that was widely condemned.
Meanwhile,
a Syrian official daily newspaper, Tishrin, slammed U.S. threats of
military action against Iraq, accusing Washington of double standards
in focusing on Iraq’s alleged efforts to acquire nuclear weapons,
while ignoring Israel’s known nuclear arsenal.
“Washington
insists on incriminating Iraq, that has no links with the events of
September 11, 2001 and no longer possesses any weapons of mass
destruction, according to UN inspectors,” said Tishrin.
“Yet
it ignores Israel which has a huge nuclear arsenal and refuses to sign
the nuclear weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty,” said the paper, which
like the rest of the media here largely reflects the views of the
government.
Damascus
has grown increasingly frustrated with U.S. policy on the Middle East
in recent weeks, after being excluded from international consultations
on the region, which have been confined to key pro-Western states,
Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
