JERUSALEM, June 16 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Two Israeli
soldiers were killed and four injured, including one seriously, in a
resistance attack late on Saturday, June 15, outside a Jewish
settlement in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said in a statement on
Sunday, June 16.
The
statement increased the number of wounded to four from an earlier army
statement that three had been injured, Agence France-Presse (AFP)
reported.
Earlier
an army spokesman told AFP a unit of at least three Palestinians,
armed with guns and hand grenades, opened fire at an army patrol about
half a kilometer to the east of the Dugit settlement.
The
attack was claimed by the military wing of the Islamist movement
Hamas, the Ezzedine Al-Qassem Brigades in a statement faxed to AFP in
Gaza
.
“A
member of our group armed with a gun and hand grenades attacked the
Israeli settlement of Dugit,” the Ezzedine Al-Qassem Brigades said.
The
Palestinian, whose name would be announced within a few days, was
killed during the attack, the statement said.
“We
will continue the jihad [holy war] and resistance until the end of the
occupation of our land,” it read.
Palestinian
security sources said that after the attack there was an exchange of
gunfire inside the settlement and that Israeli tanks fired at the
village
of
Beit Lahia
and the Sudanese area near the settlement.
The
Israeli attacks led to the injuring of some Palestinian residents and
the destruction of a Palestinian ambulance.
Meanwhile,
an Israeli military source said late Saturday that Israeli forces blew
up a booby-trapped car found parked outside a fence line stretching
along two Jewish settlements in the northern Gaza Strip.
Two
missile launchers, a hot water tank and 180 kilograms (396 pounds)
worth of explosives were found inside the car, which was discovered
along the fence surrounding the settlements of Alei Sinai and
Nitsanit, the source said.
The
army then blew up the car in a controlled explosion, the source added.
A
second explosive device was found some 30 meters (yards) from the car,
the army said.
In
another development, Palestinian News Agency WAFA reported Sunday that
the Israeli army hit missiles early Sunday on the Rabwat area in west
Khan Younes.
The
Israeli tanks which were based in the Jani Tal Israeli settlement hit
missiles and opened fire at the residents’ homes and severely
damaged them.
